As someone who typically over-consumes (in the most respectable way), I've been seeing the term "underconsumption core" all over my TikTok For You page. While I love the idea of normalizing buying less, I think creators are getting a little looney tune with their interpretation of what underconsumption core actually is. Or maybe I’m the one with the problem.
My spending habits fluctuate and typically revolve around clothing purchases. Every so often, I feel like I have an abundance of unnecessary items in my apartment and do a giant purge. The idea of needing to move on a whim gives me the heebie-jeebies. What do I want to pack up? What will I leave behind? Will this fit in a box? Is it worth it to move this? This probably stems from not being content in my current location, but either way, it affects my spending habits.

But back to underconsumption core. The TikTok creators I see showcase their empty showers with one bottle of Dove soap, empty kitchens with two plates and minimalism in a completely unsexy way. They’re even throwing out things they’ve already purchased. You’ve already consumed it, just keep it, babe. Why is that necessary? Is it not possible to under-consume in style? Doesn't underconsumption go hand in hand with the ever-so-popular capsule wardrobes?
Underconsumption can be trendy and still sexy. I can have just two things in my shower, but you bet they’ll be my Kérastase shampoo and conditioner. I have zero need for multiple perfumes—one will do just fine. There is just something about this that seems boastful. “I don’t buy a lot of things and I’m not easily influenced (YEAH, OKAY), so I’m better than you.”
While I don’t under-consume, I do like to be purposeful in what I’m buying. Quality basics are my go-to (am I basic for this?), and if I can’t create multiple outfits with an item, I’m not buying it. That’s what renting is for.
Can we please have more than two plates, though? I hate doing dishes and like to imagine I host extravagant dinner parties every now and again.
